Minutes by Celeste Diaz
Open Job Lab Laptop Security (Darcy)
- Four laptops stolen so far (frames broken, locks left behind); laptops currently have tethers; any ideas on securing laptops better?
- Adjust staff schedule to match laptop usage
- Is there a cart that can hold a laptop?
- Laptops are tagged
- HPL volunteer to be in Compass area
- Best solution is to have a staff member in Compass area
- This is a top service priority and HISD is placing a greater emphasis on Workforce Development (starting as early as the 8th grade)
Checking Out Chargers (Edgar)
- For in-house use
- Possible to install lockers (similar to Robinson's)
- What about safety issues (cords everywhere, tripping hazards)
- How about selling battery packs (battery packs have to be charged at time of sale)
- How about a pad that can charge (priced between $30-50; Djuina will research); available through city vendors?
Wireless Authentication (Jeff)
- Cloud managed (point of access)
- IT is proposing that in order for customers to use our Wi-Fi, they must have a library card and pin #. This may be a problem because HPL has a lot of customers that don't have a library card but use our Wi-Fi
- Fort Bend and Harris County require users to sign in
- At busiest times, the public Wi-Fi is overrun
- Any comments or questions, email Jeff
RFID Directly on DVD (Felicia)
- Will tags damage equipment? Tags have to be placed with the right equipment and carefully placed on the disc; costly to order DVDs fully processed
- Positioning of DVD is very important; must be kept in line of sight
- Audiobooks are also getting stolen
Abusing Holds System (Janna)
- Customers are requesting lots of holds but are not picking them up. Any ideas/solutions to prevent abuse of holds system?
- Suspension of privileges? Will we lose customers if this is implemented?
- The system will allow you to charge for holds, but not to charge a fee automatically for not picking up holds
- Since the migration to Workflows, some customers have been having issues receiving email notifications.
Organizing YA Graphic Novels (Janna)
- Too hard to locate; Janna is proposing to shelve by call number
- Shelving depends on location; for example, Central's shelving reflects a comic book store
- Contact Sally Bates for assistance in organizing this section
- Miscataloged graphic novel? Contact selectors so they can review and determine if recall is necessary
Open Discussion
- In-House Use Items- is there a scanner available for Samsung tablet?
- Bluetooth scanner is compatible (has to be used for Sirsi)
- Are pen scanners compatible? No
- Is there a scanner that can read RFID tags?
- Pedro will research options
