Veteran's Day Event (Tim)

  • Evening event will be held at the newly renovated Jungman on the week of November 7th (on their late night)
  • Will be hosted by Dominick Spinelli and Tim Siegel
  • Writing contest (Rebecca can help Tim with setting this up)
  • Art contest
  • Photo display
  • Operation Gratitude: care packages that include letters and artworks by children (Mary suggested doing a Veteran's Day-themed storytime/craft)
  • Invite local Veteran groups to event
  • Tim will be sending an invitation to staff members who may want to join the Veterans Services Committee
  • Veterans Web Link on website: Tim requested that this be streamlined so staff can better assist customers
Charity Donation Round Up (Tim)
  • HPL to donate to organizations like BARC or Friends of HPL (similar process like restaurants and stores requesting donations) - can this be incorporated into Smart Money? Will customers want to participate?
  • Large monetary donations - Can Dimitri/Financial Services set up a location-specific fund? Can this be set up in Smart Money? Does this need to be set up through the Foundation?
  • Patrick will discuss this with Liz
Virtual Library Services Update (Lauren and Dan)
  • Enhancement on Readers' Link Tab (under Learn and Explore) - more images and content
  • E-books & More - will be streamlined
  • Dan has been working on Back to School feature and Teen and Tweens section
  • Mega Menu will be rearranged; headings may change
  • Reorganization of Links - Workforce Development (too many links to get to this; will soon be rebranded as Job Readiness); Veterans' Services Page, Youth Services (separate links for parents and educators and students); databases that should be linked to genealogy (Sue will send list to Lauren)
  • There are still issues with the Events Module; there will be two trainings/refreshers on August 19th and September 2nd (email Virtual Services or sign up on the Training Portal); Dan and Lauren look for patterns, if any, and let Saima know so she can notify the senior managers. Can the setup be defaulted to Plain Text? For recurring events, start time and end time should be the start hour and the end hour
  • Online book club currently has 31 members; poll to choose book has been sent out (due 8/11/16)
  • Virtual Services will visit different locations to get new content for "Our Staff" section.
Story Time Online (Patrick)
  • Utilize the 360-degree camera to post story times online (suggested by Marcia Cameron-Denton)
  • What kind of releases will we need: participants, publishers, music copyright?
  • Mary suggested posting staff programs and services, like Homeless Help at Central
Library Layouts (Patrick)
  •  A floor plan that shows locations for Adult, Teens, and Kids items
  • Can a PDF file be created for each location? Can it also be added to the app and location info on HPL website?
  • Alejandro Lozano has all layouts/maps
  • This will need approval from SPACES and Communications.
Meescan App (Mary)
  • Will be piloted at JUN and YOU
  • Customers will be able to check out items using their smartphone; there will be a desensitizing pad
  • JUN and YOU will have both a self-check machine and the Meescan app (will help determine what is more popular with customers)
  • There will be iPads for use by customers with no smartphone access.
  • Will we be able to get circ numbers from Meescan? Yes.
  • Meescan may be more cost-effective than installing self-check machines at all locations, but we will still have to install RFID/EM security and this may be costly.
  • This needs to be tabled until Rick can present and answer all questions
The Wave (Mary)
  • "Turns your flat screen TV or monitor into a touchscreen tablet with remote control."
  • This can boom programming; can help HPL market our materials better
  • Can be used for passive programming
  • Casting from tablet
Open Discussion
  • Two big screens in Program Place to replace projectors; staff needs training; Robin is working on this
  • New Reservation System at Central - going well but sill has a few glitches; kids are using guest passes (so now there is no way to verify ages); Emmanuel advises to report any issues to Digital Strategies
  • Walk Ups - Emmanuel wants to research other cities' library systems; Emmanuel wants Robert Bliss to present his takeaways from his visit in Pasadena
  • Jeff is requesting feedback on Self Logics and Tech Logic
  • Fines and Fees were disabled on self-check machines July 1st; replaced with PCI system
  • 3M/RFID - DS has set up where staff has to choose whether they are checking in or checking out items; piloted at MOO; Paty is requesting this for CEN
